Traditional Braces

Your How-to Guide to Getting Braces

Braces are reliable and can fix many different types of dental issues. They can make a smile beautiful but also correct biting issues, so mouth function allows for better eating and nutrition. They can also fix speech issues. Both adults and children are considering braces now.

Reasons vary for the popularity of braces. Some want to correct long-standing problems while others want to improve their smile to compete in their career or get back into dating. Whatever the reason, straightening teeth with braces can improve confidence. At Mall Road Dental, we have many options for braces so you can find a solution that fits your look and price.

You don’t like your smile

People who hate to take pictures or tend to cover their mouth when they talk to others are often ashamed of their smile. Braces can straighten teeth to create a lovely look.

Consider Orthodontics

No one is ever too old for orthodontics. However, you can be too young for braces. Most orthodontists recommend children between 9 and 11 years old to get braces. Braces should come after their permanent teeth are in but not fully fused into the bone for best results. A social component is considered too as most of their friends have braces at that age and their treatments will end before dating becomes important.

Mall Road Dental Has a Variety of Braces

Options for braces go beyond the traditional metal type. All are effective and the type you choose depends on how much or little of the braces you or your family member are willing to display.

Lingual braces

Those who want completely invisible braces can get lingual braces. These are like traditional metal braces but the difference is they are attached behind the teeth, completely hiding them from public view.
They work as traditional braces to shift teeth but can be uncomfortable. They can rub against the tongue and cause some speech impediments. Mall Road Dental would love to talk to you about your best option!

Clear or ceramic braces

Clear braces are sometimes called ceramic braces because the brackets are made of a ceramic that matches teeth. The arch wires are a frosted metal. The combination makes these braces more attractive and less noticeable. The only issue with clear braces is they aren’t as strong as traditional metal braces and can break more often. Check-ups remain the same at every four to six weeks but it could take more time to see effective results.

Traditional braces

Traditional metal braces are still incredibly popular because of their affordability and reliability. They have arch wires, brackets, and elastic bands that may give the wearer some trouble. That is the primary complaint.
Another version exists called self-litigating braces. These don’t require elastic bans and use clips on the arch wires. They are comfortable and easy to maintain.
Those who don’t mind elastic bands but hate the way they look can try our different colored elastic bands. Children and pre-teens like these because they can better express themselves and make wearing braces more fun. Call to schedule an appointment!

Basic Facts About Braces

Orthodontic treatments continue on average for 18 months. Individual cases may vary and some may last up to three years. At Mall Road Dental, we can talk to you about expectations during your first consultation.
The cost also depends on each case but most braces fall between $3,000 and $7,000. Lingual braces can be more expensive, costing up to $10,000.

Are Clear Aligners an Option?

Many ask us about clear aligners like Invisalign to avoid the look of braces. Not everyone is eligible for clear aligners as an orthodontic treatment. They work effectively but you must wear them at least 22 hours a day.

The cost is comparable to braces but it may take more time to get the results you desire.
