Traditional Braces

Braces at Mall Road Dental

Braces are a reliable orthodontic treatment used to correct misaligned teeth and bite issues. They can make it easier to chew, support speech clarity, and improve the overall appearance of your smile. Both children and adults may benefit from orthodontic care.

Orthodontic Care for Children and Adults

Orthodontic care can benefit both children and adults. For children, an initial orthodontic assessment is often recommended around age 7 to monitor how permanent teeth are coming in, though treatment typically begins between ages 9 and 14 when the jaw and teeth are still developing. Early intervention helps address crowding, spacing, or bite concerns at the right stage of growth. Many adults also choose orthodontic treatment to correct long-standing issues, improve oral function, or enhance the appearance of their smile. With options such as ceramic braces and clear aligners, adults now have more discreet choices that fit their lifestyle.

Types of Braces

Options for braces go beyond the traditional metal type. All are effective and the type you choose depends on how much or little of the braces you or your family member are willing to display.
Traditional braces

Traditional Metal Braces

Metal braces are the most common orthodontic option and have been used for decades to successfully correct a wide range of alignment and bite issues. They use metal brackets and archwires, which are adjusted regularly to gradually move teeth into position.

While some patients find the look of metal braces more noticeable, they remain a reliable and effective treatment. Today’s metal braces are smaller and more comfortable than they were in the past, and elastic bands are available in different colours, which many children and teens enjoy choosing.

Lingual braces

Lingual braces

Lingual braces work like traditional braces but are placed on the inside (tongue-facing side) of the teeth, making them hidden from view. Because they are completely out of sight, they are popular with patients who want their orthodontic treatment to be invisible. Lingual braces may take some adjustment, as they can affect speech or cause temporary tongue irritation, but they remain an effective option for many patients.

Clear or ceramic

Ceramic Braces:

Ceramic braces function in a similar way to metal braces but use clear or tooth-coloured brackets that blend more naturally with your smile. This makes them less noticeable, which many older teens and adults prefer. While ceramic braces are strong, they can sometimes be more delicate than metal braces, which means extra care may be needed. Treatment time is usually comparable to metal braces, but your orthodontist will guide you on whether ceramic braces are a good option for your case.

Clear Aligners

Clear Aligners (such as Invisalign®)

Although not technically braces, clear aligners are a popular orthodontic option. They use a series of removable, clear trays that gradually move teeth into alignment. Clear aligners are nearly invisible and can be taken out for eating, brushing, and flossing, making them convenient for many patients. They require consistent wear — usually 20–22 hours per day — and may not be suitable for all cases. Your orthodontist will determine if aligners are a good choice for your needs.

Treatment Timeline

On average, orthodontic treatment with braces lasts 18–24 months, but some cases may be shorter or longer depending on individual needs.

Clear Aligner Alternatives

Clear aligners, such as Invisalign®, are another option for some patients. They are removable and less visible than braces, but not everyone is a candidate. Aligners must be worn as directed, usually 20–22 hours per day, to be effective.
