Crooked or crowded teeth that affect appearance or function.
Metal braces are the most common orthodontic option and have been used for decades to successfully correct a wide range of alignment and bite issues. They use metal brackets and archwires, which are adjusted regularly to gradually move teeth into position.
While some patients find the look of metal braces more noticeable, they remain a reliable and effective treatment. Today’s metal braces are smaller and more comfortable than they were in the past, and elastic bands are available in different colours, which many children and teens enjoy choosing.
Lingual braces work like traditional braces but are placed on the inside (tongue-facing side) of the teeth, making them hidden from view. Because they are completely out of sight, they are popular with patients who want their orthodontic treatment to be invisible. Lingual braces may take some adjustment, as they can affect speech or cause temporary tongue irritation, but they remain an effective option for many patients.
Ceramic braces function in a similar way to metal braces but use clear or tooth-coloured brackets that blend more naturally with your smile. This makes them less noticeable, which many older teens and adults prefer. While ceramic braces are strong, they can sometimes be more delicate than metal braces, which means extra care may be needed. Treatment time is usually comparable to metal braces, but your orthodontist will guide you on whether ceramic braces are a good option for your case.
Although not technically braces, clear aligners are a popular orthodontic option. They use a series of removable, clear trays that gradually move teeth into alignment. Clear aligners are nearly invisible and can be taken out for eating, brushing, and flossing, making them convenient for many patients. They require consistent wear — usually 20–22 hours per day — and may not be suitable for all cases. Your orthodontist will determine if aligners are a good choice for your needs.
