An X-ray and exam are performed to determine if root canal treatment is appropriate.

The procedure is scheduled, and in some cases antibiotics may be prescribed. An impression may also be taken if a crown will be placed afterward.

Local anesthetic is used to numb the tooth. The infected pulp is removed, and the root canal space is cleaned.

The space inside the root is filled with a special material to help prevent reinfection. A temporary filling or crown may be placed.

A second appointment may be required to place a permanent, customized crown for full function and protection.
